2013 Capital One Academic All-District Teams
GAINESVILLE, FL – For the second straight season, Hartwick College women’s basketball player
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Team, announced on Thursday, Jan. 31.
Purcell, a junior guard for the Hawks, is one of five players from New York State to earn all-district honors. University of Rochester senior Jaclyn Walker and RIT junior Kayla Wheeler join Purcell as two-time recipients. RPI senior Sarah Wetmore and Yeshiva junior Rebecca Yoshor also were selected.
The Academic All-District Teams, which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada and include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants. The teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
This season, Purcell has helped Hartwick to a 16-4 overall record and 8-1 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. She is the Hawks’ team leader in three-pointers made (36), rebounds (7.2/game), assists (63) and steals (55). In the Empire 8, Purcell ranks in the top five in five statistical categories – steals (1
st), three-pointers made (2
nd), free-throw percentage (3
rd), assist-to-turnover ratio (4
th), and assists (5
th).
In a victory over Houghton earlier in the year, Purcell shattered the all-time Hartwick record for three-point field goals in a career. She currently has 122 in her three seasons with the Hawks. Purcell also ranks seventh in ’Wick history in career steals with 185.
A Biology major at Hartwick with a cumulative GPA of 3.74, Purcell has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen, and with the girls’ basketball team at Mount Mercy Academy. She is also a member of the Hartwick Multi-Sport Club and has been a moderator for the ’Wick Senior Showcase.
Purcell now advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team men’s and women’s All-America honorees will be selected in February.
