Before the action begins, here are some quick facts you should know about the conference tournament. (
*Quick facts will be based on the current tournament format years 2004-2013).
The Empire 8 will employ a four team tournament format for the 10
th straight year. Prior to the 2004 tournament, the E8 champion was determined based on the regular season finish.
All four teams that qualified for the 2012 E8 Tournament return again this year with the same seeding.
Four E8 tournaments have played out according to seeding (2004, 2005, 2006, 2012).
The #1 seed is 9-0 in the semifinal game of the tournament. #2 seed (6-3), #3 seed (3-6), #4 seed (0-9).
The #4 seed has never advanced to the championship game. But #1 Ithaca’s only conference loss this year was to #4 Fisher on Jan. 18 (63-59).
The #3 seed has won the title three times (2008, 2009, 2010).
The #2 seed has won the title twice (2007, 2011).
The #1 seed won the title in 2012, for the first time since 2006.
2013 marks the fifth straight year and seventh time overall that Ithaca will serve as the number one seed.
Ithaca returns to the tournament as the only team to make an appearance in each of the conference’s 10 tournaments. The Bombers have advanced to the title game seven of a possible nine times.
Hartwick is making its second straight and fourth appearance overall in the tournament. The Hawks advanced past the semifinals for the first time last year.
Stevens has made the E8 tournament each year since joining the conference in in 2007-08. The Ducks have advanced to the title game three times, hoisting the trophy twice (2009, 2011).
Fisher is making its ninth tournament appearance (missed 2007) and will serve as the #4 seed for the fifth time. The Cardinals have advanced to the championship game three times (2004, 2005, 2006), winning the title in 2006.
Ithaca returns as the defending champion from 2012. The last time a team won back-to-back titles was by the Bombers in 2004 & 2005.
