Stevens Expands Lead on Day 2; Morrison Breaks Diving Records

Empire 8 Day 2 Results

The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team expanded its lead in the 2013 Empire 8 Championships Thursday in Ithaca, N.Y.

The Bomber 200-yard freestyle relay team set a championship meet and school record with a time of 1:22.10 in the event finals, out-touching Stevens by two-hundredths of a second (1:22.12). Ithaca's time met the NCAA B qualifying standard and was turned in by the team of Peter Knight, Jake Robbins, Adam Zelehowsky and Zack Kundel. Hartwick placed third (1:23.23).

Stevens senior John Hu and sophomore Price Hu placed first and third in the 400-yard individual medley with times of 4:00.43 and 4:09.60, respectively, while  Ithaca freshman Addision Hebert was second (4:08.90). John Hu's time was good for an NCAA B-cut.

Stevens senior Daniel Munt hit a B-cut and set a school record mark with a 50.37 in the 100-fly final, outtouching Ithaca junior Taylor Van Cott (50.77), by .4 tenths of a second. Stevens Joshua Lefeber placed third (51.04). 

Ithaca freshman Adam Zelehowsky won the championship in the 200-yard freestyle. He swam 1:40.91 in the finals, and qualified in 1:40.43. Both times were NCAA B qualifying times and his prelim set an Ithaca College record. Hartwick junior Brad Ranson hit a B-cut time of 1:41.68 for second place and Ithaca's John Carr was third in 1:42.16.

Ithaca sophomore Matt Morrison set a championship meet record as he won the 1-meter diving finals with a score of 553.30 and scored 554.45 in the preliminaries. Defending champion Martin Brown was second in the event with a total of 526.75 and scored 534.30 in the prelims. Nazareth freshman Jeff Green took third with a score of 443.35.

Stevens finished the evening action with a great performance in the 400-medley relay, re-breaking its own school-record and championship mark set earlier in the day. The team of Greg Charriez, Simas Jarasunas, Munt and Shawn Hanak nabbed another B-cut of 3:21.68.  Ithaca College's 400 medley relay team was second in the event finals with an NCAA B cut of 3:23.33, which beat the previous school record by nearly two seconds. Hartwick finished third (3:25.01).

The morning session will start at 10 a.m., while the finals will be held in the evening beginning at 6pm.
