ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Dan Burke, freshman on the Nazareth men's swimming and diving team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Athlete of the Week for the period that ended Feb. 3.

Burke, of Baldwinsville, N.Y. and a graduate of C.W. Baker High School, broke a 31-year-old school record Saturday as Nazareth closed its dual-meet schedule with a close loss to RIT. His first-place time of 1:00.04 in the 100-meter backstroke eclisped the mark of 1:00.85 set by Hall of Famer Rick Carvotta in March of 1982. Burke narrowly missed breaking Carvotta's record in the 200-meter backstroke as he finished first in that race with a time of 2:11.04. Carvotta's record is 2:10.99.

Burke also swam the lead-off leg of Nazareth's 200-meter medley relay that also broke the school record with a time of 1:51.63.

Nazareth swims again Feb. 20-23 at the UNYS/Empire 8 Conference meet at Ithaca.
