Stevens Rolls Past Yeshiva, 13-1, in Season Opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 20, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team opened up its 2013 season with a convincing 13-1 victory over Yeshiva University at Dobbelaar Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. Nearly every active player on the roster and six pitchers saw action in the win.
Out of the 16 NCAA Division III games scheduled today, Stevens was the only east coast team north of Washington D.C. to play at home. Game time temperature was 33 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 19.
Stevens scored seven of its 13 runs in the first three innings and recorded 12 hits, including four doubles. The six pitchers combined on a three-hitter and struck out 16 Maccabees. On the bases, the Ducks swiped seven bags.
Sophomore
Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) highlighted the offensive output, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Prontnicki also stroked a double, stole a base, walked and was hit by a pitch.
Freshman
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, scored twice and drove in a run. Yano was also hit by a pitch and stole three bases.
Sophomore
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) recorded the third two-hit day of the game in three trips to the plate with a double, hit by pitch, sacrifice fly and one RBI.
Six other Ducks scored at least one run, while five picked up at least one RBI. Senior
Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) scored twice, while his brother, freshman
Ryan Donovan (Frisco, Texas) drove in two. Freshman
Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) also crossed the plate two times for Stevens and knocked in one more.
On the mound, senior
Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) earned the start and victory in two innings pitched with four strikeouts. Sophomore
Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) was next out of the bullpen and struck out the side in one inning of work.
Freshmen
Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas) and
Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) combined to throw four innings with seven punchouts. McIntyre surrendered two hits and an unearned run, while Robbins gave up just one hit.
Two more freshmen,
Alexander Osgood (Epping, N.H.) and
Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) each tossed one inning and struck out one batter a piece.
Stevens will be back on the diamond this Saturday against CCNY at 12 p.m. for another nine-inning home game.
