Fisher Baseball Sweeps Penn State Abington in Doubleheader
The St. John Fisher College baseball team swept Penn State Abington in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL. With the wins, Fisher improves to 6-2 on the season while Abington falls to 4-8. The Cardinals will complete their trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at 1 p.m. on Saturday as they play a single game against Union College.
Game One: Fisher 10, Abington 4
An six-hit, eight-run second inning blew the game open for the Cardinals. Mike Fahy got things started with a one-out single before Nick Flemister singled through the right side. Johnny Beck came to the plate and also singled with an infield hit to the shortstop, driving in Fahy.
Shane Barley then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, allowing Flemister to cross the dish. Mike Roman then singled with a bunt that drove in Beck. As things were going well, Fisher then brought the top of its order up, with Sean Osterman drilling a triple to deep left centerfield, driving in two scores.
Ben Bostick then was hit and Osterman scored when Chris Roeder lined out to left field for a sacrifice fly RBI. Brad Rush, who started off the inning by flying out, did not waste his second opportunity, going yard to left field to end the Cardinals scoring in the second.
Fisher added to runs in the sixth to cruise to victory.
Sean Badger got the start for the Cardinals and earned his first win in a Fisher uniform, going six innings while allowing seven hits and three runs. Teddy Ruff came in to close the game out for Fisher in the seventh.
Rush, Osterman, Roman and Fahy all finished with two hits, while Rush led the way with three RBI. Osterman and Roman each drove in two runs while Osterman scored twice.
Game Two: Fisher 8, Abington 5
Fisher scored in every inning except the second to take down Abington 8-5. The Cardinals started with three runs in the first on four-straight singles from the top half of the order to gain control of the game early.
Roeder led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in two runs while scoring twice as well. Rush also had two hits, his coming on three at-bats, scoring twice while catching the foul out to end the game.
Osterman continued his prowess at the plate in the second game, also going 2-for-3 while scoring twice. The other Cardinal with a multi-hit game was Bryant Moore, who had two hits and crossed the plate once.
Thomas Dybas got the start and lasted four innings, allowing just five hits and three runs while striking out two. Erin Moskal relieved Dybas in the fifth inning with two runners on and no outs. Moskal allowed two runs, both unearned, and three hits in a three inning appearance for the save.
