D'Amato Cruises as Fisher Shuts Out Union
BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida with a 6-0 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL. Fisher was powered by an outstanding complete-game, shutout performance by pitcher Justin D’Amato to move the Cardinals’ record to 7-2 on the year.
D’Amato allowed just four hits on the day, three of which came in the ninth inning. The left-handed pitcher, at one point, retired 17-straight Dutchmen hitters after surrendering a hit and a walk in the third inning with one out. He entered the ninth inning with those 17-straight outs and only 90 pitches on his arm.
The first three Union hitters singled off D’Amato in the ninth before the lefty focused, striking out the next two batters swinging and inducing a groundout to end the game. D'Amato finished the contest with 10 strikeouts.
Fisher got the only run it would need in the second inning when Mike Fahy reached base on a walk. Fahy then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Shane Barley stepped to the plate and drove in Fahy with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
At the plate, the Cardinals generated six runs in the outing on seven hits. Mike Roman went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Brad Rush and Matt Creenan both went 2-for-4, with Rush crossing the plate twice while Creenan drove in a score.
Sean Osterman also had one of Fisher’s five RBI on the day, crushing a double in the fourth inning to drive in Roman.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday back in New York as it travels to take on SUNY Fredonia for a single, nine-inning game.
