Stevens Splits with Staten Island; Ducks Win Game Two Behind Mannello HR and Courter Gem

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 10, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team split a doubleheader with the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field, 4-3, 7-1. Stevens is now 5-2 on the season after the seven-game homestand to open the 2013 campaign. The Ducks dropped the opener but bounced back to take the night cap.

Game One: Staten Island 4, Stevens 3

The Ducks fell behind early after Staten Island plated two runs in each of the first two innings but battled back to within one right after the sixth. In the seventh, Stevens was retired in order to end the game.

Staten Island led off the game with four straight singles to score twice but sophomore Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, Md.) settled down and struck out the side with two runners on.

Buccheri gave up two more runs in the second on an RBI-double, followed by a single that brought one Dolphin across the plate. Buccheri suffered the loss but struck out 10 batters over five innings of work with no walks.

Freshman Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) drove in the only run for Stevens in the bottom of the sixth as part of a 2-for-3 Game One. Toro also stole one base.

Stevens’ three-thru-eight batters collected the other six hits in the game. Senior Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) stroked a double in three at bats, while freshmen Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) both scored a run with a base hit. Bush swiped one bag as well.

Junior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) scored a run, walked and stole a base in three official trips to the plate.

Out of the bullpen, freshman Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed two perfect innings. Patterson only allowed one ball to leave the infield that way put in play in five at bats.

Game Two: Stevens 7, Staten Island 1

Sophomore Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) delivered a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game wide open and cap off the four-run inning for the Ducks. Mannello entered the game as a defensive replacement in the top half of the inning and made the best of his only at bat of the contest.

Senior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) picked up his second win of the season and needed just 62 pitches to get through six innings. He struck out three batters and allowed one run in the first inning. Courter retired the side in order in each of the next five innings he pitched.

Lowenstein batted 1-for-2 with three stolen bases, a run scored, one RBI and a walk to cap off his afternoon, while Allen drove in a run with two hits in four at bats to go along with a swiped bag.

Yano completed the double dip with a 2-for-3 Game Two, including a steal and run scored. Toro scored twice, stole a base and walked, while sophomore Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) pushed a run across the plate in the fourth inning in his lone base hit of the contest.

Sophomore Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) laid down a sacrifice bunt and scored in two trips to the plate with one base hit.

The Ducks will be back in action March 13 at CCNY for a 3 p.m. game before playing three games in two days at the SUNY New Paltz Tournament on the 16th and 17th.
