Demorest, GA – The Elmira College Softball team was swept by the Piedmont College Lions, 2-1 and 8-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex. With the sweep the Lions improve to 4-0, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 2-2.

The first game proved to be a pitchers dual with Alex Puglisi ’14 going toe to toe with Piedmont’s Brittney Head. The Soaring Eagles were able to get on the board first when Megan Anderson ’15 hit an RBI single to score Mikayla Bean ’14. However, the Lions responded with an RBI single of their own to tie it at 1-1. Both pitchers threw the next four innings scoreless and it looked it to be ready for extras, but the Lions kept the pressure on eventually scoring the game winning run in the sixth when Jamie Dennis scored on a fielder’s choice. Puglisi threw six innings allowing two earned runs, four hits, and five walks. Head pitched all seven innings for Piedmont allowing one earned run, and two hits, while throwing four strikeouts.

Game two would be different story as the Lions stepped up the offense and shutdown the Soaring Eagles. Piedmont used a five run second inning to cruise to the 8-0 victory. Alex Andrade ’13 produced the two solo hits for EC. Katie Hobson ’13 pitched the first inning and a third allowing four hits and four runs. Puglisi came in relief pitching the next two and two-third innings allowing three hits and two runs, while throwing a strikeout. Sarah Johnson ’15 finished the game on the mound allowing two runs, while throwing one strikeout and three walks.

The EC Softball team will return to action Thursday, February 21 when it travels to Atlanta, GA to take on No. 23 Emory University in a non-conference double-header. First pitch will be at 12:30 p.m.
