FORT MEYERS, Fla. -- Nazareth opened its 2013 softball schedule by splitting a pair of gamers Sunday. The Golden Flyers were shut out by North Park of Illinois, 15-0, in the opener, then bounced back for a 10-3 win over Bethany Lutheran of Minnesota in the second game.
In the first game, North Park roughed up Nazareth pitchers
Nicole Bayona and
Danae Wetherbee for 11 hits and 15 runs over just five innings. Nazareth managed just one hit, a harmless fifth-inning single by Wetherbee.
Freshman
Carly Pike was the pitching and hitting star in the second game. She pitched all seven innings and scattered seven hits, while striking out three. She also had two hits in four at bats, including a three-run homer as part of a five-run sixth inning. Junior
Sarah Cipperly had three hits in four at bats, including a double, and junior
Liz Toner went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Freshman
Maureen Rogers was on base four times, including a double and a single, and scored twice.
Nazareth plays two more games Monday -- vs. Olivet of Michigan at 1 p.m., then vs. Wooster of Ohio at 3 p.m.
