Ithaca Wins Third Straight 11-Goal Game at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team (3-0) defeated host Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) 11-6 Tuesday night at Foster Field.

The Bombers held the Marlins to just one goal in each of the first three periods, while powering to a 9-3 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan outscored Ithaca, 3-2, in the fourth frame to finalize all scoring at 11-6.

Four Bombers, senior Connor Lowe, junior Joe Perkins and sophomores James Manilla and Steve Danylyshyn, tallied twice. Juniors Pat Slawta and Andrew Kristy each netted one in addition to their game-best two assists apiece. Junior Casey Schattner added one score and one assist, while senior Andrew Bruce and Lowe each recorded an assist.

Kristy matched his career-high with six ground balls as Ithaca held a 42-38 gap in the category. Ithaca also outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 44-32, and won 13 of 21 faceoff attempts. Sophomore Matt Greenblatt was 7-for-13 in faceoffs to lead the Bombers.

Freshman Scott Sidnam made six stops to improve to 3-0 in goal for the Bombers.

Ithaca netted the first two of the game for a 2-0 edge at 8:38 before the Marlins got on the board. Leading 3-1 at the end of the first, the Bombers struck again just one minute into the second. The host squad answered just 35 seconds later to cut within 4-2, but Ithaca scored four unanswered for an 8-2 lead at intermission.

Freshman Eli Gobrecht won the faceoff to open the latter half en route to a Manilla goal on a Kristy assist just 13 seconds into play. A Marlin goal had the game at 9-3 entering the fourth. The Bombers ran away with the lead with back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the fourth period. Virginia Wesleyan had a trio during the final five minutes of action to cut within five, 11-6.

The Bombers continue their spring training trip with a 7 p.m. game Thursday at Christopher Newport.
