Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men’s Lacrosse team scored four goals in the second and fourth quarters, but it would not enough as it fell 13-8 to Oswego State University Wednesday afternoon at Elmira Free Academy Field. The win improves the Lakers to 3-0, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-2.
The Lakers came out firing in the first period outshooting the Soaring Eagles 17-4 and getting an early 3-0 lead. However, the EC defense was able to step up in the second period holding Oswego to only 11 shots, while the EC offense kicked it into gear. In the quarter the Purple and Gold were able to get 10 shots off with
David Evert ’14 recording two goals and an assist, while
Jackson Correia ’14 and
Brady Richards ’14 each recording a goal. The score was tied at 4-4 going into break with both teams looking to come out strong early in the third quarter.
In the second half the Lakers took over the game scoring eight consecutive times to take a dominant 12-4 lead with 7 minutes left in the game. The Soaring Eagles did not give up and cut into the lead with less than five minutes left when
Erik Bertsch ’14 put it into the back of the net. About two minutes later
Evert started the EC comeback assisting
Brian Conzola ’14 on two man-up scores and
Richards on a man-up score to make it 12-8. However, the Lakers were able to settle down the Soaring Eagles with a final score near the end of regulation to make it 13-8.
Casey Balzer led both teams in scoring with four goals, three assists and three ground balls.
Evert led the Soaring Eagles registering two goals, four assists, and three ground balls.
Conzola followed with two goals, one assist, and five ground balls.
Dave Bucchino ’13 played well in net for EC making 13 saves in the loss, while Bryan Martin played in net for Oswego making seven saves.
The Men’s Lacrosse team returns to action Saturday when it travels to Brockport, NY to take on SUNY Brockport at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
