Stevens Edges Out Rochester, 6-3

POMONA, Calif. (March 13, 2013) - The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team edged out the University of Rochester, 6-3, early Wednesday afternoon.

Stevens improves to 2-4 on the spring season while Rochester drops to 8-3.

The Ducks took an early lead as senior captain Chris Rosensteel (East Windsor, N.J.) and freshman Matthew Heinrich (Hendersonville, Tenn.) won their match at first doubles, 8-4, but close losses at Nos. 2 and 3 put Stevens in a 2-1 hole heading into the singles matches.  Freshman Ben Foran (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and senior Shota Tasaki (Greenwich, Conn.) just missed the point at second doubles, losing 7-9, while freshman Tyler Tisdale (Grapevine, Texas) and sophomore Nicholas Rosasco (Alpine, N.J. fell at third doubles, 6-8.o

Rosensteel and Heinrich dispatched their opponents handily at first and second singles, respectively, winning 6-4, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-1.  Foran dropped his first set (4-6) at third singles but came back to take the final two sets, 7-6 (3) and 6-0, clinching the win for the Ducks. Tasaki was also victorious at fourth singles, 7-6 (6) and 6-0, while Tisdale came out on top at fifth singles, just losing the first set, 6-7 (4), but winning the second, 6-3, and taking a thrilling final-set tiebreaker, 10-5.  Junior Derek Smith (Boise, Idaho) fell at sixth singles, 2-6, 0-6. 

Head Coach Steve Gachko and the Ducks will take a well-deserved 10-day break before heading to Cambridge, Mass to take on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 23.
