The No. 16 St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a 13-9 win over William Smith College at Boswell Field on a cold Friday night.  With the win, Fisher improves to 1-0 on the year, while William Smith falls to 0-1.

The Herons opened with the game’s first goal, but Fisher responded with four-straight tallies to take a 4-1 advantage.  The goals were scored by four different Cardinal attackers, as Taylor Hughes started the streak and Melissa Leonhard, Kristina Lombard and Lindsey Shoales followed suit.

It would remain a three-goal difference at the end of the first 30 minutes, after both teams scored three more goals before the stanza closed.  The Cardinals entered the locker room with a 7-4 lead.

The home team cut the Fisher lead to one goal after scoring the first two of the second half, but Fisher again responded with another streak, scoring six goals to William Smith’s one.  Hughes completed her hat trick to start the run, and followed with her fourth and final of the day to give Fisher a 9-6 lead.

Leonhard then scored Fisher’s next three goals, and Sam Barton added her first score as a Cardinal to give Fisher a 13-7 lead.  William Smith added a goal between two of Leonhard’s tallies, but the home team would never be able to recover from its early deficit.

Leonhard would finish with a game-high five points on four goals and one assist. She also picked up a game-high 12 draw controls. Kristen Zylka led the team with three assists, all coming in the first half.  Shoales ended with two goals, while Emily Bryerton also scored for the Cardinals.

In addition to her goal, Barton added an assist, as did Erin Ward.  Brianna Frey and Marykate Edmunds each scooped up two ground balls and caused a turnover.

Fisher will head to California for its next two games, taking on Occidental College at 7 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday and No. 22 University of Redlands at 7 p.m. (PST) on Friday.
