CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11, 2013) – Fourth-ranked Gettysburg College defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 18-5, in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game in Clermont, Fla. Monday morning. The loss drops the Ducks to 2-2 on the season, while the win pushes to the Bullets to 3-0.

Stevens received three scores from junior midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and got one apiece from senior midfielders Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.) and Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.).

Galligan and Rafferty gave Stevens a 2-0 lead early on with back-to-back tallies over a span of just 23 seconds less than three minutes into the game, but the Bullets responded with two scores of their own to tie the game at two apiece at the 26:43 mark of the first period.

Rafferty answered for Stevens, putting away a feed from Waybright, but the Bullets closed the first period with eight-straight scores to take a 10-3 margin into the locker room.

After Gettysburg made it 11-3, Rafferty recorded her third marker of the game behind another Waybright assist, but the Bullets were too much for Stevens, eventually earning the 18-5 victory.

The Bullets were led by five goals and two assists from junior attack Kelsey Markiewicz (Salisbury, Conn.) and five goals from junior attack Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J.). Senior midfielder Hayward Sawers (Timonium, Md.) had four caused turnovers, while defender Alex Casey (Jenintown, Pa.) notched five ground balls.

Waybright had one goal, two assists, three ground balls and six draw controls for Stevens, while Rafferty had three scores, one helper and one draw control. Sophomore defenders Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Gabriela Sanchez (Auburn, N.H.) each tallied a pair of ground balls and one caused turnover.

The Ducks will return to action Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. against Wheaton College. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
