HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 13, 2013) – For the fourth time in six games this season, the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball pitching staff struck out double-digit batters in a 10-2 victory over the City College of New York on Wednesday afternoon. Although the game was played at Dobbelaar Field, Stevens was the away team in the box score since the contest was originally scheduled at CCNY.
Eight different Ducks toed the rubber and combined for 11 strikeouts in nine innings. Sophomore
Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) led the way by punching out the side in the third inning to earn the victory. Juniors
Craig Leopold (Edison, N.J.) and
Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.), and freshman
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) each fanned two CCNY hitters in an inning of relief. Freshmen
Bridger Cohen (Chester, N.J.) and
Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) accounted for the other two strike outs for Stevens.
The Ducks got things underway in the top of the first inning with two runs after Yano singled to left field and brought sophomore
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) across the plate. Sophomore
Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.J.) then pushed Yano across the dish with a single to center to cap off the inning.
In the third, Stevens plated five more runs to build a 7-0 advantage. Nickels scored his second run of the game after a fielding error to begin the rally. With the bases load, senior
Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to bring in Yano from third base, and then junior
Matt O’Brien (Goffstown, N.H.) drove in two more runs with a base hit to right. Courter tagged up and scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
After a run in the fourth for the Beavers, Stevens pushed three more across the dish in the seventh. With the bases loaded again, Courter and O’Brien scored on another CCNY error after freshman
Thomas Sheridan (Staten Island, N.Y.). Junior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) collected the final RBI of the day with a single to left that plated Sieber.
Yano and Sieber led the way at the plate for Stevens with two hits apiece. Yano also scored twice, as did Courter and Nickels, while O’Brien drove in a pair with two walks. Nickels also stole a base.
Sophomore
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman
Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) both doubled in the game. Mannello scored once and drove in another, while Toro swiped a bag.
Stevens will be back in action this weekend at the SUNY New Paltz Tournament March 16 and 17. The Ducks will take on host New Paltz and 9:30 a.m. on the 16th and follow up with another tilt against Mount Saint Mary College at 12:30 p.m. on the same day. On the 17th, Stevens and Baruch College square off at 12 p.m.
