Junior Class Powers Ithaca to 8-2 Win at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team (4-0) remained perfect on the season with an 8-2 victory at Christopher Newport (4-3) on Thursday evening at Captains Turf Field.

A scoreless quarter opened the game, before Ithaca rattled off three straight in the second for a 3-0 gap at intermission. The Bombers took a 4-0 lead, but CNU tallied two of the next three to cut within 5-2 entering the fourth. Ithaca netted a trio in the final frame to finalize all scoring at 8-2.

Junior Jake Long posted a hat trick to lead the Bomber offense. Classmate Pat Slawta added two and one assist and junior Joe Perkins tallied one goal and one assist. Juniors Brandon Henne and Ryan Burns each recorded one goal for the Blue & Gold.

Defensively, senior Adam Wacenske forced a game-high four turnovers and joined sophomore Jimmy Ryan in scooping up a Bomber-best four ground balls apiece.

Freshman Scott Sidnam made a career-best 11 stops in goal, while improving to 4-0 on the season and holding the Captains to their fewest goals since a 10-2 loss to Goucher on March 26, 2011.

Ithaca held a 42-28 advantage in shots and a 28-23 margin in ground balls, while the Captains owned the face off category, 9-5.

The Bombers return to action on Wednesday, March 20 when they host Oneonta at 4 p.m. in their 2013 home opener at Higgins Stadium.
