FORT MEYERS, Fla. -- Nazareth softball split a pair of non-conference games Tuesday as the Golden Flyers continued their spring break tour through Florida. Nazareth opened the day with a 7-3 victory over Kenyon of Ohio, then dropped the second game, 13-0, to Ohio Wesleyan. The Golden Flyers are 2-4 overall.
Against Kenyon, freshman
Carly Pike won for the second time on the pitcher's mound and she helped herself in the batter's box by going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Pike's double came as part of a four-run third inning and was aided by base hits from
Liz Toner and
Sarah Cipperly. The Golden Flyers stretched the lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the fifth.
Shauna Bardanis had the key hit in the frame, a two-run single.
Cipperly also finished 3-for-4, while Toner added two hits. Pike allowed eight hits, but just one earned run over seven innings. She walkeed four and struck out one.
The second game lasted only five innings as Ohio Wesleyan roughed up the Golden Flyers for 13 runs on 10 hits, including a lead-off triple by Brooke Nethers in the first inning and a three-run triple by Dani Haley as part of a seven-run third inning.
Nazareth didn't get untracked offensively as the Golden Flyers were limited to four singles -- by
Emili Capicchioni in the second,
Cydney Luke in the third and by Pike and
Kelly Barrett in the fourth.
Nazareth is idle Wednesday, then plays Wheaton, Ill. and Delaware Valley Thursday afternoon.
