FORT MEYERS, Fla. -- Nazareth dropped a pair of spring break softball games in Florida Thursday, giving the Golden Flyers a 2-6 overall record heading into Friday's games vs. Nichols, Mass. and North Central, Ill.
The Golden Flyers lost a 5-inning game to Wheaton College of Illinois, 13-0, then saw a late rally fall short in a 7-6 defeat to Delaware Valley.
Nazareth went through a rough outing against Wheaton as the Golden Flyers committed six errors, compounded by nine hits by Wheaton in a 13-0 rout. Wheaton scored three runs in the first inning, five more in the fourth and five in the fifith to end the game early. Nazareth also went hitless at the plate, but had a scoring chance in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Golden Flyers loaded the bases with two outs as Wheaton committed three errors. Junior
Meg DeMario grounded out to end the threat.
Against Delaware Valley, Nazareth led 4-2 through five innings, but DVC scored four times in the top of the sixth and once in the seventh to take a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh,
Sarah Cipperly reached on a one-out single and advanced to second when
Carly Pike reached on a fielder's choice. After
Sophia Rhoades singled, Cipperly and Pike each scored on an infield error. With two outs and tying run at second base,
Maureen Rogers struck out to end the game.
Cipperly had three hits in four at bats and Pike and Rhoades each had two hits.
Trailing 2-0, Nazareth got a lead-off double by Cipperly in the fourth. She advanced to third on a single by Pike and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Shauna Bardanis. Nazareth scored three more times in the fifth inning as
Morgan Ross doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Cipperly.
Liz Toner reached on a walk and later scored on a single by Pike. Cipperly then crossed the plate on a single by Rhoades.
Pike was the losing pitcher for the Golden Flyers as she yielded 10 hits over seven innings with six strikeouts.
