The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse program suffered its first loss of the season, as the Cardinals dropped a 13-6 decision to visiting SUNY Geneseo on Thursday afternoon at Fisher’s Growney Stadium.

With the loss, No. 14 Fisher falls to 3-1 overall, while Geneseo improves to 3-1 overall.

Fisher never led in the game. Geneseo scored the game’s first three goals, and after a goal from All-American Melissa Leonhard, scored the next three goals and led 7-3 at the half.

Fisher scored the first goal of the second half to make it 7-4 and appeared to make it a two-goal game at 7-5 with 21 minutes left, but the goal was taken off the board after Sam Barton’s stick was deemed illegal.

The Blue Knights pulled away after that, scoring seven of the game’s next eight  goals and cruised to the win over the Cardinals.

Leonhard led the Cardinals with three goals, while Taylor Hughes, Jill Zerrillo and Barton also scored.

Leonhard also won nine draws and forced four turnovers.

Fisher will return to action at 5 p.m. on Friday and will host SUNY Fredonia in the Flower City Cup.   The game will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III Championship first round match that saw the Cardinals win 9-8 over the host Blue Devils in overtime.
