Nazareth loses to Nichols, N.Central

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nazareth's women's softball team completed their spring break trip to Florida as the Golden Flyers dropped a pair of non-conference games. Nichols College of Massachusetts rallied to score four runs in the seventh inning for a 9-6 victory in the first game. Then North Central College of Illinois scored eight runs in the first three innings for a 10-2 victory in the second game.

Nazareth returns home with an overall record of 2-8. The Golden Flyers' next game is March 26 at Cortland.

Against Nichols, Nazareth had eight hits and led 6-5 through five innings. Freshman Kelly Barrett drove in the tiebreaking run on an infield grounder to score Shauna Bardanis, who doubled to lead off the inning. Nichols, however, rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh on three hits to take the lead for good.

Nazareth batted in the bottom of the seventh and freshman Emili Capicchioni had a two-out single, but was left stranded when Barrett grounded out to end the game.

Nazareth had scored three times in the second inning with the assistance of four Nichols errors. Meg DeMario also had a double and a run scored. Nazareth added two more runs in the fourth as freshman Maureen Rogers smacked a two-run single to score DeMario and Kailey Ritch, who each reached on walks.

Freshman Danae Wetherbee was the losing pitcher in relief of starter Carly Pike. All four runs Wetherbee allowed were unearned.

Wetherbee also took the loss in the second game as North Central teed off for one run in the first and five more in the second. Taylor Ryan had a two-run triple for North Central in the second inning and Amanda Walker followed with a two-run single.

Nazareth scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first as Cydney Luke led off with a single, advanced to third on a double by Rogers and scored on an infield grounder by Sarah Cipperly#. Rogers then scored one batter later on a single by Pike. The Golden Flyers managed just two hits thereafter -- a single by Rogers and a double by Cipperly in the sixth.
