BOX SCORE

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team suffered its second straight loss, as the Cardinals dropped a 14-13 decision in overtime to visiting SUNY Fredonia on Friday in the Flower City Cup Coaches Vs. Cancer Lacrosse Showcase.

This game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division III Championship First Round matchup.   Fisher won that game, 9-8 in overtime at Fredonia. Today, however, the Blue Devils returned the favor.

Fisher who led 7-5 at the half, enjoyed three-goal leads on two different occasions during the game, but the Blue Devils rallied in the
second half.

Fredonia scored five straight goals over a 10-minute span in the second half to take the lead and never trailed again.

Fisher trailed 12-10 with just under 10 minutes to go in the first half, but managed to tie the game up at 12s.  Emily Bryerton scored with 7:15 remaining and less than two minutes later, Melissa Leonhard scored a free-position goal.

Fredonia regained the lead with 3:20 left, but Fisher won the ensuing draw and Kristina Lombard scored her second goal of the year with just over two minutes left in regulation to force overtime.

After neither team scored in the two mandatory overtime period, Fredonia made two big saves in the early moments of the third overtime period and scored with :59 seconds left.

Leonhard finished with four goals, while Hughes added three goals and one assist. Erin Ward chipped in with two goals and one assist, while Sam Barton tallied one goal and one assist. Lindsey Shoales also scored for Fisher.

Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Sunday.  The Cardinals will host Western New England University.
