No. 10 York (Pa.) Downs Stevens, 11-5

YORK, Pa. (March 16, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team dropped to 3-3 on the season with an 11-5 loss at 10th-ranked York College (Pa.) Saturday at Kinsley Field.
 
The Ducks were led by two goals apiece from junior midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Erica Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). Senior goalie Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) made 10 saves in goal for Stevens and also scooped up a team-high three ground balls. Wilcox led the Ducks with three draw controls, while sophomore defender Gabriela Sanchez (Auburn, N.H.)  recorded a team-high three caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.) had a pair of assists.
 
York (5-1) tallied the game’s first three goals with two coming from junior attack Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md.) who led the Spartans with five points on the afternoon (four goals, one assist).
 
From the 16:35 mark all the way to the 7:16 mark of the first half neither team scored, with the Ducks finally getting on the board behind a score from sophomore attack Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.). Stevens scored two more – one from Rafferty, one from Wilcox – to tie the game at three-all with 3:58 left in the first period.
 
From that third Stevens score (3:58 of the first) all the way to the 2:44 mark of the second half, York held Stevens scoreless, tallying eight-straight goals over a span of 24:13 to open an 11-3 margin with 6:07 to play. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md.) scored three times in the run and Mulford twice.
 
Rafferty and Wilcox scored their 16th and sixth goals of the season, respectively, for the Ducks to close the scoring as the Spartans earned the 11-5 win.
 
York held a 30-17 edge in shots and a 23-10 margin in ground balls. The hosts won 12-of-18 draw controls and put nine more shots on goal (20-11).
 
Stevens will return to action on March 23 when it welcomes Brockport to the De Baun Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. It will be the team’s first home game since the Ducks’ season-opener on March 23 versus Mount Saint Vincent and all the action will be webcast live at www.Empire8.TV
