Houghton Comes up Short at Hiram
HIRAM, Ohio -- Houghton overcame a three-goal halftime deficit with four second half goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hiram Terriers in a 5-4 road loss Saturday.
Hiram scored three times on just four shots in the first 30 minutes to a take a 3-0 lead into the half.
After
Amanda Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) got the Highlanders on the board with just over two minutes gone in the second half, the Terriers pushed the lead back to three with a goal eight minutes later. Houghton answered just a minute later on a goal from
Nicole Mason (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and added two more over the next 10 minutes, from
Tyler Reese (Unionville, PA, Unionville High School) and
Maesa Phongsamouth (Leominster, MA, Leominster), to tie the score at four.
Hiram scored with 52 seconds left to secure the win.
The Highlanders, who had three goals disallowed in the contest, outshot the Terriers 12-6 on the afternoon. The Terriers also committed 34 turnovers to just 19 for the Highlanders. Ground balls were 23-20 in Houghton's favor.
Lauren Niswander (Peninsula, OH, Revere) made two saves in 60 minutes.
The Highlanders return to action at home on Wednesday, March 20 in a re-scheduled game against Wells College at 7:30 p.m.
