Lowenstein and Cornell Earn Empire 8 Weekly Award
Junior catcher Curt Lowenstein
of the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the second time this spring, while Houghton sophomore Seth Cornell was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.
Lowenstein helped Stevens to a 2-1 week and the Ducks are now 7-3 overall. In two games started, Lowenstein batted .556 (5-for-9) for the Ducks. He also drove in two runs and stole two bases, while also throwing three runners out. Against Mount Saint Mary College, he went 3-for-5 in a 3-1 loss with one steal and hit 2-for-4 with the game-winning 2-RBI single against SUNY New Paltz. Both games took place on March 16 and he sat in a 10-2 win over CCNY earlier in the week.
So far this season, Lowenstein leads Stevens with a .433 batting average (13-for-30). He is also tops on the squad in stolen bases with eight, total bases with 15 and is tied for first with 13 hits. His .485 on-base percentage ranks second, as does his seven runs scored and six runs batted in.
Cornell recorded the program's first-ever no-hitter in an 18-0 Houghton win over Bard College in the first game of a double header Sunday. Cornell struck out 13 and walked three in seven innings of work. He allowed only four base runners (three walks and an error), and only let two shallow pop-outs leave the infield.
The Highlanders are 3-3 on the season.
