Leonhard and Belanger Tabbed Athletes of the Week

The Empire 8 Conference has named Melissa Leonhard of the St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team its Player of the Week and Stephanie Belanger of the Utica Pioneers the Goalie of the Week for the week ending March 17, 2013.

Leonhard finished with a 12-goal week in three games for the Cardinals. The senior scored three times on five shots in Tuesday’s loss to Geneseo, while picking up seven ground balls and winnings nine draws. Leonhard finished with four goals in the 14-13 triple overtime loss to SUNY Fredonia on Friday afternoon in the Coaches vs. Cancer Flower City Cup. On Sunday, she led Fisher to a 19-5 win over Western New England University with six points on five goals and one assist in the final game for the Cardinals in the Flower City Cup.

Fisher returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as it host SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference matchup.

Belanger, who received this award two weeks ago on Mar. 4th, led the Pioneers to a 1-1 week as they beat the Sage Colleges on Wednesday, 19-3, and then lost to Clarkson, 12-11, in triple overtime. She tallied 19 saves in the two games as she stopped 10 against Sage and nine against Clarkson.

On the season, the senior goal keep has led CU to a 4-1 overall record while registering a 5.85 goals against average.  She currently has 28 saves throughout the four contests while also scooping up a team-high 15 groundballs.

The Pioneers are 4-1 overall this season and return to the field Tuesday, Mar. 26th when they travel to Oswego, NY to face the Lakers of Oswego State in a non-conference contest set to start at 4 p.m.
