Rochester, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team outplayed the University of Rochester in the second half, but the comeback was not enough as it fell, 10-7, Wednesday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium. The win improves the Yellowjackets to 1-3, while the loss snaps a two-game winning streak and drops the Soaring Eagles to 2-2.
Rochester rocketed out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first half behind a goal and three assists from Emily Hogan. In her first game for the Soaring Eagles Women’s Lacrosse team
Ashton Hogan ’15 got the team on the board with 13:58 remaining on a pass from
Rory Donahue ’14. Two minutes later
Moorea Spoljaric ’16 tallied her team-leading 12th score of the year off a
Marissa Mongillo ’15 pass. The Yellowjackets led 7-2 at intermission.
After a Rochester score out of halftime Elmira scored three of the next four goals to get within 9-5.
Gretchen Smith ’16 and
Laura Powell ’16 tallied unassisted markers, while
Donahue scored off a pass from
Bridget Keefe ’14.
After another Yellowjacket goal
Spoljaric and
Sami Risi ’14 found the back of the net in the final three minutes for the 10-7 final. EC held advantages in ground balls (29-23) and draw controls (12-7), while Rochester had the edge in shots on goal (21-11) and turnovers (21-29).
Mongillo,
Laura Bartus ’13 and
Erin Duffy ’14 led the Purple and Gold, combining to pick up 14 ground balls.
Bartus and
Duffy caused seven Yellowjacket turnovers.
Hogan and
Keefe recorded four draw control wins apiece.
LeAnna Presler ’14 stopped 11 shots in net for Elmira, while Stephanie Ortell made four saves for Rochester. The Women’s Lacrosse team returns to the field Saturday when it takes on Nichols College in Dallas, PA at 1:00 p.m.
