#18 Bombers Drop Double Overtime Heartbreaker at Top-Ranked Cortland
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The 18th-ranked Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team (5-1) took top-ranked Cortland (6-0) to double overtime before suffering a 9-8 setback to the Red Dragons. The loss was Ithaca’s first of the season.
Ithaca took an early 3-0 lead behind a Pat Slawta hat trick and held a 3-2 edge at halftime. The Bombers powered to a 5-2 lead four minutes into the third and had a 6-4 margin entering the final frame. Cortland posted three goals early in the fourth to take its first lead of the game. Ithaca knotted the game at 7 at the nine-minute mark. Four minutes later, the Red Dragons netted another. Junior Brandon Henne won the ensuing faceoff that led to an Andrew Bruce score that sent the game to overtime. The Bombers had two unsuccessful shots in the final 10 seconds of regulation.
The Red Dragons laced off four shots in the first overtime before recording the game-winner on their first shot in the second extra period.
Freshman Scott Sidnam stopped a career-best 16 shots on the night.
Junior Jake Long joined Slawta in netting a hat trick, while Bruce and Andrew Kristy accounted for the other two Bomber goals. Slawta added a pair of assists.
Sophomore Matt Greenblatt won 9-of-14 faceoffs to help Ithaca lead that category, 11-10. He added a game-best seven ground balls.
Cortland owned a 45-28 margin in shots, while Ithaca had a 36-31 edge in ground balls.
The Bombers return to action on Wednesday, March 27 hosting Oswego at 4 p.m. The game has been changed to be played at Ithaca, rather than at Oswego.
