NATIONAL CHAMPION! Jarasunas Wins Title in 100-Breaststroke on Day 3 of NCAA Championships

SHENANDOAH, Texas (March 22, 2013) – Junior
Simas Jarasunas of the Stevens Institute of Technology highlighted day three of the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships by winning the 100-yard breaststroke. Jarasunas became the first National Champion in the history of the Stevens' men's swimming program.
Stevens is now in sixth place overall in the men's standings with a team total of 123 points. Kenyon is in the lead with 321.5 and Denison is second with 276. MIT is third (257), Emory is fourth (210) and Johns Hopkins is fifth (200). Forty four institutions have earned points at the 2013 national meet. Ithaca College is 20th with 20 points and Hartwick College is 32nd with 11 points.
The Stevens women’s team is in seventh place after three days of competition. The Ducks have a team total of 127 points. First-place Emory has 396.5 points, Kenyon has 341 and Denison is at 255 in third. Williams is fourth (224), Johns Hopkins is fifth (169.5) and Amherst is sixth (162). Fifty institutions have earned at least one point at this year’s championships. Hartwick is 37th with nine points and Ithaca is 40th with seven points.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
Jarasunas touched the wall with a time of 54.57, edging out Colby Kubat of St. Olaf College who was second (54.96) by .41 of a second. The junior picked up 20 team points and set a new school-record. The Lithuanian matched his previous school-record with a 55.55 in the prelims, and entered the championship final as the second seed.

John Hu tallied a 1:47.79 and finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, setting a new school record in the process.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
Stevens junior
Louise Moores was the first Empire 8 athlete in action at the evening session. She placed 11th in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 55.87.
Sophomore
Brittany Geyer took third in the 100-breaststroke final, notching a school-record time of 1:03.09. Nazareth senior
Carissa Risucci finished eighth in the event with a time of 1:04.02.
Ithaca College senior diver
Kloe Boeckel placed 24th in the preliminaries of the women's 1-meter diving event with a score of 358.85.
