Brockport Overpowers Stevens, 19-9

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 23, 2013) – The College at Brockport Golden Eagles defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 19-9, Saturday in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
Brockport scored eight of the game’s first nine goals and the Ducks could get no closer than four the rest of the way en route to the 10-goal win. With the victory, Brockport improves to 5-1. The loss drops Stevens to 3-4.
Stevens was led by three points from senior tri-captain
Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.), senior tri-captain
Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior midfielder
Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.).
The Golden Eagles scored three early goes before sophomore attack
Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) put Stevens on the board with a free-position goal 8:40 into the action. Brockport answered, running off five-straight tallies to open an 8-1 lead with 13 minutes to play in the first half.
Rafferty scored two of the next three tallies to make it a 9-3 game, with freshman
Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Waybright getting the Ducks within four goals at 9-5.
Senior midfielder
Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) was able to score three-straight times bridging the first and second periods to give the Golden Eagles a 12-5 lead, but the Ducks did not quit, fighting back within five behind goals from Rafferty and Galligan.
The two squads alternated tallies over the next several moments and the scoreboard showed 13-8 guests with 21:03 remaining, but from that point on, the Golden Eagles controlled the action, outscoring Stevens 6-1 over a span of 9:06 to earn the 19-9 victory.

Sarah Brown (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the story for Brockport, finishing the game with 11 points on three goals and eight assists. Sophomore midfielder
Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had four goals, while Zartman and sophomore
Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, N.Y.) notched three apiece.
Sophomore defender
Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Galligan led Stevens with two caused turnovers apiece, while the two players had four and three ground balls, respectively. Hughes had two points, with Rafferty and Galligan each getting five draw controls.
Brockport ended with a 34-26 edge in shots and each team was whistled for 27 fouls. The Ducks committed 20 turnovers compared to 17 for Brockport, with the Golden Eagles ending the game with a 24-20 edge in ground balls. Stevens finished the contest with a 16-14 margin in draw controls.

Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) took the loss in goal for Stevens, making nine saves, while sophomore
Remle Harr (Farmington, N.Y.) made nine stops and took the win for Brockport.
