Strong Second Half as Elmira Defeats Nichols

Dallas, PA – The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team outscored Nichols College 6-1 after halftime to cruise to a 12-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 3-2, while the loss drops the Bison to 2-4.

Ashton Hogan ’15 and Moorea Spoljaric ’16 combined for an impressive eight points in the win for Elmira. Hogan tallied four goals, while Spoljaric netted three scores and added an assist.

Rory Donahue ’14 also scored two goals and dished out a helper, while Marki Michaels ’13, Emma Schepers ’13 and Gretchen Smith ’15 added the other scores for EC.

The Soaring Eagles got out to a great start scoring six of the contest’s first seven goals, with two apiece coming from Hogan and Spoljaric. However, Nichols closed the final 7:39 of the half with four straight scores to get within 6-5 at intermission.

EC proved to be the tougher team in the second half as they outscored the Bison 6-1 and five different players tallied a goal, including two from Hogan. Elmira held distinct advantages in shots on goal (28-11), ground balls (26-16), and draw controls (14-5).

LeAnna Presler ’14 and Mary Kate Gellerman ’13 split time in net for Elmira. Presler earned the win making four saves in the first half, while Gellerman stopped one shot in the second half. AnneMarie Fana made 15 saves in the loss for Nichols.

The Women’s Lacrosse team returns to action Sunday when it takes on Misericordia University in Dallas, PA beginning at 1:00 p.m.
