Stevens Rolls to 17-0 Victory over Yeshiva

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 24, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team erupted for six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to run away with a 17-0 victory over Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field. Eight different hitters for Stevens drove in at least one run in the shortened seven-inning contest.
The Ducks (9-4) were led offensively by sophomore
Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Prontnicki belted a solo homerun, his first of the season, to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and also walked once.
Fellow sophomore
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) also drove in three runs in two trips to the plate after entering the game as a defensive replacement in the fourth. In his first at bat, Mannello stroked a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fourth and then pushed another run across with a single in the fifth.
Senior
Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas), junior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), sophomore
Matt O’Brien (Goffstown, N.H.) and freshmen
Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) and
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) all picked up two RBI in the victory.
Despite going 0-for-4 at the plate, Donovan earned his RBI on a hit by pitch and groundout. Allen nearly hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, but was ruled a ground-rule double after the ball was lodged at the bottom of the left field fence.
O’Brien recorded just one official at bat, in which he smacked an RBI double, and walked three times with three runs scored.
Bush batted 1-for-2 with a run scored and walked, while Yano went 1-for-3 and pushed both his RBI across with a single in the fourth inning.
Freshman
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) recorded two hits in four at bats with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Sophomore
Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) stole two bags and laid down a sacrifice bunt as part of a 1-for-2 afternoon, which included two runs scored.
Senior
Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) earned the start and struck out three batters over three innings of work. Mathews surrendered just two hits before being replaced by sophomore
Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.), who punched out five hitters with one walk in two innings of relief.
Picking up the win was freshman
Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.), who threw a perfect sixth inning with a strikeout. Classmate
Easton Obojkovits (Holmes, N.Y.) tossed the final inning out of the bullpen and gave up one hit with one strikeout.
Stevens will entertain William Paterson University on March 27 at 7 p.m. before opening up Empire 8 Conference play against St. John Fisher College for a pair of doubleheaders on March 29 and 30. All five games will be in Hoboken.
