NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 24, 2013)
 – The Stevens Institute of Technology just missed sweeping the United States Coast Guard Academy, taking all three doubles matches and first through fifth singles to win, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Stevens improves to 3-5 this spring with the victory while USCG drops to 1-6.

Senior Chris Rosensteel (East Windsor, N.J.) and freshman Matthew Heinrich (Hendersonville, Tenn.) started the day off with a thriller at first doubles.  With the match knotted at 7-7 and Rosensteel serving against break point, Heinrich took back-to-back points to move to 8-7 and the Ducks pairing quickly put USCG in the same position.  Although they faced two match points, USCG held on to take the set and force a tiebreaker, which Rosensteel and Heinrich won handily, 7-3.

Freshman Ben Foran (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and senior Shota Tasaki (Greenwich, Conn.) edged out their opponents at second doubles, breaking USCG’s serve to take the match.  Freshman Tyler Tisdale (Grapevine, Texas) and junior Derek Smith (Boise, Idaho) made it a sweep for Stevens at third doubles, topping their foes by a score of 8-3.

The Ducks continued their excellent play through the singles matches, with Rosensteel victorious at first singles by a pair of 6-3 scores and Heinrich winning at second singles, 6-3 and 6-0.  Foran won 6-3, 6-3 at third singles, with Tisdale and Smith also picking up victories in their highest court placements of the season at fourth (6-1, 6-2) and fifth (6-3, 7-5) singles, respectively.  Senior Brian Liebeskind (Basking Ridge, N.J.) took the Ducks’ only loss of the day at sixth singles, falling, 6-2, 6-1.

Head Coach Steve Gachko and the Ducks will take another extended break before facing New York University (1-2), which will be playing its first match in over a month, on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.
