Houghton Drops 16-5 Decision at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College jumped on the Highlanders early and grabbed a 16-5 win in men's lacrosse action Tuesday.

The Tomcats scored seven times in the opening period to take a 7-2 lead. Michael Ball (Binghamton, NY, Chenango Valley) and Tyler Kempney (Carthage, NY, Carthage High School) scored for the Highlanders in the opening stanza. The hosts extended the lead to 11-4 at the half after four second quarter goals.

After another Thiel goal to start the third, Houghton was able to pull two back when Ball got back-to-back tallies. However, the Tomcats would score four more times over the next quarter and a half to put the game away. Scott Martens (Harford, PA, Mountain View High School) scored the final Highlanders goal with 40 seconds left.

Kempney led the Highlanders with eight ground balls, a category that the Tomcats led 43-24 as a team. Houghton had 24 turnovers to just nine for Thiel. Shots were 54-17 in favor of the hosts.

Gabriel Browning (Aitkin, MN, Aitkin High School) played just over 58 minutes in goal, allowing all 16 goals and making 19 saves. Josh Haingray (Houghton, NY, Houghton Academy) made one save in just over a minute of action.

Houghton (1-5) is back in action Wednesday when they travel to take on LaRoche.
