Hartwick Men's Lax Outlasted by Castleton State, 14-8

CASTLETON, VT- In a physical game that included a combined 29 penalties, host Castleton went on a 6-0 run in the second quarter on its way to a 14-8 victory over the Hartwick men’s lacrosse team on Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks to 4-3 overall while the Spartans improve to 4-2.

Castleton jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first two goals of the game. The Hawks got on the board when Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) struck with 1:43 remaining in the first frame. At the beginning of the second quarter, the Hawks knotted the score when Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) notched the equalizer just 41 seconds into the frame to tie the game at 2-2. 

The Spartans took advantage of a handful of Hartwick miscues as they capitalized on seven second quarter penalties called on the Hawks. Castleton got two man-up scores in the quarter that began its 6-0 run to finish the half as the Spartans surged ahead to an 8-2 halftime lead. 

In the third quarter, Hughes notched his second goal of the game at 13:07 to bring Hartwick to within 8-3. Two Castleton goals within 42 seconds of each other gave the Spartans a 10-3 advantage. Following a penalty on the Castleton, ’Wick would take advantage on the extra-man opportunity when Vaglica found Hughes for the score to make it 10-4 heading into the final quarter of play.

Hartwick would try to come back in the fourth quarter but Castleton proved to be too much as it tacked on four more scores in the period. The Spartans led 14-6 with 3:19 left to play in the game. Hartwick scored the last two goals of the contest; one by Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville Dewitt) and the last by Hughes with just six seconds left but it was not enough as Castleton came out victorious.

Hughes led the way for the Hawks with six goals. Vaglica scored once and added two assists and Goss scored his first collegiate goal.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started in goal and stopped six shots in 51:40 of game time. He was relieved by Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) who had four saves in 8:40.

Zach Davidson scored four times for the Spartans and also dished out five assists. Nohea King and Spencer Hunt both tallied three scores. Phil Paterson, Ken Bourneuf, Luke Titus, and Will Stahler all scored once. Peter Latulippe picked up the win in goal and stopped 14 shots.

The Spartans had a slight lead in shots, 41-40. They also led in ground balls, 31-24. Shane Latsko (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) paced the Hawks with six ground balls on the afternoon.

Hartwick will begin Empire 8 play this Saturday when they will face St. John Fisher on the road. Game time from Growney Stadium will be at 1 p.m.
