Utica Doubles Up Oswego; Pioneers Improve to 5-1
Utica, NY (3/26/13)- The Utica College women’s lacrosse team improved to 5-1 on the season as it downed visiting Oswego State, 10-5 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of the contest, before UC responded to score the next seven goals in the first half. Sophomore Morgan DuPont cut the Oswego lead to one with an unassisted tally at 23:09. Classmate Megan Kane scored a free position goal at 19:00 to even the score. Just over a minute later, Vanessa Maines fed Patricia Kane for her 11th of the season. Megan Kane added two more free position goals and Louise Steele-Norton and Courtney Wheeler each found the back of the net once to send UC into the half with a 7-2 lead.
Oswego fought back in the second half, scoring three of the game’s next four goals. With 7:30 left in regulation, Danielle Citro netted her fifth tally of the season to bring the Lakers within three, but tallies from DuPont and Megan Kane sealed the victory for the Pioneers.
Megan Kane had a game-high four goals, while DuPont netted two of her own. Steele-Norton, Patricia Kane, Wheeler, and Samantha Gebler each netted one goal on the day. Wheeler and Julia Primps also added one assist.
Stephanie Belanger made eight saves in the win, while Lauren Marois and Nikki Greco combined for eight save in net for Oswego.
Utica returns to action Saturday as it opens Empire 8 Conference play against Hartwick. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
