ONEONTA, NY
– Hartwick first doubles duo Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) and Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) recorded ’Wick’s first win on the year, but Hartwick’s men’s tennis team fell by a count of 8-1 to Concordia (WI) on Wednesday afternoon in Hilton Head, SC.

The loss drops the Hawks to 0-2 on the season. The victory for the Falcons improves their season mark to 4-8.

Dumas and Redder combined to beat Concordia’s top doubles team of Skip Turner and Taylor Shaffer by a score of 8-4 and the Hawks would trail 2-1 heading into singles play.

The two teams’ singles matches were very competitive but the Hawks would come out on the short end in each of them. Freshman Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Suffield) and sophomore Keith O’Connor (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia HS) each took their opponents to a third set in their respective matches.

Brown, after dropping the first set 6-2 to Antoine Leone in fourth singles, battled back to take the second set by an identical score of 6-2 to force the deciding third set. Unfortunately, Leone would come away with a 6-3 win in the set to claim the victory.

O’Connor, competing at the sixth singles flight, also fought from an early deficit. Falcon Ryan Buffamonte won the opening set 6-4, but O’Connor stormed back in the second, taking it by a count of 7-5. The two players entered a super tie-breaker to 10 points and Buffamonte would take 10 of 13 points for the victory.

In third singles, Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore HS) forced a tie-breaker in the first set against Shaffer. Both players won six games before Shaffer edged out Gilbraith 8-6 to take the opening set. He would close out the win 6-0 in the second set.

Sean Coppola (Canastota, NY/Canastota HS) also won seven games in his fifth singles match against Tanner Hahn, 7-5, 6-2. Redder took five games in second singles and Dumas won three in the first spot.

Hartwick will wrap up competition in Hilton Head on Friday. The Hawks play Franklin College (IN) at 6:30 p.m.
