St. John Fisher College senior Kayla Goodberlet became the 10th player in NCAA Division III softball history to hit two home runs in the same inning on Thursday, as the Cardinals cruised to two wins over visiting Medaille College.

Goodberlet went 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI in the two games, including two home runs in the first inning of the first game.

After starting the season off 2-6, Fisher has won five of its last six games and is 7-7 on the year, and Goodberlet’s statistics have mirrored Fisher’s overall success.  A three-time All-Region selection, Goodberlet started the season off 1-for-23 (.043 batting average) with one run and one RBI, but in the last six games, she is batting 13-for-18 (.722) with 16 RBI, 10 runs and five homers.

Fisher will return to action at noon on Saturday and will host Rochester Institute of Technology.

Game One: Fisher 10, Medaille 2 (5 innings)

The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Cardinals answered with a 10-spot in the bottom-half of the frame, highlighted by two home runs from Goodberlet.   The third baseman hit a three-run homer to give her team the lead for good and added a two-run shot later in the inning.   Leanne Merchant also homered during the first.
Pitcher Lauren Wesolowski pitched the first three innings, striking out five, to earn her second win of the season.  Rachel Angell pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and one run.

Jessie Smyrski went 3-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI, while Meghan Burns was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.  Christina Sakran was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jazzi Chadwick and Kate Disbrow also picked up base hits.

Sarah Fordyce, who hit a three-run, walk-off home run in yesterday’s 7-5 win over University of Rochester tripled in the win.

Game Two: Fisher 8, Medaille 0 (5)

Goodberlet gave Fisher a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo shot to right-center and two batters later, Fordyce homered to make it 3-0 and the rout was on.  Smyrski hit a bases-loaded triple and finished with a career-high four RBI, while Disbrow was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Sarah Stefanon picked up the win, tossing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.  Hillary Panek didn’t allow a run over the final two innings.
