Houghton Loses Twice to Scranton to Wrap up Florida Trip
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Seth Cornell (Almond, NY, Alfred-Almond CS) spread seven hits and allowed just one run over nine innings, but the Highlanders allowed a run in the top of the 12th to drop a 3-2 decision to Scranton University in game 1 of a double header Thursday.
Scanton scored first in the top of the fourth, but Houghton evened the score at one in the bottom of the inning. After
Jacob Bannerman (Wasaga Beach, ON, Canada, Stayner Collegiate Institute) opened the inning with a single, he moved to second base on a ground out to second by
Ignacio Villalobos (Brantford, ON, Canada, Assumption College School) and scored on a
Michael Kerr (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg HS) single.
The teams went scoreless until the top of the 10th. With
Jared Knowlton (Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur HS) on in relief for the Highlanders, Scranton was able to take advantage of a walked and a passed ball to move a runner into scoring position. The runner moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a sac fly to right field.
Houghton was able tie the score at two in the bottom of the inning.
Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada) doubled and then scored on a
Kameron Konert (Bolivar, NY, Bolivar-Richburg CS) single.
Scranton scored the eventually game winner in the top of the 12th with three single base hits.
Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY) reached base on a single in the bottom of the 12th, but three-straight outs ended the contest.
Cornell struck out 11 in nine innings. Knowlton allowed four hits and two runs to pick up the loss in three innings of relief.
Bannerman was 2-for-6 with a run scored. Knapp was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2 -- Scranton 12, Houghton 2
The second game of the double header didn't provide as much excitement for Highlander fans as Houghton lost 12-2 and were held to one hit on the afternoon.
Scranton scored seven times over the first three innings to chase starting pitcher Kameron Konert from the contest. Konert allowed five hits and seven earned runs and walked three batters in two innings.
Jonathan DeDell (Woodstock, VT) came on in relief and allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) in four innings.
Houghton was able to score twice in the top of the fourth. McKay was hit by a pitch and scored on a Bannerman double. After Bannerman stole third, Kerr grounded out to shortstop to score Bannerman.
Scranton scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the sixth.
Bannerman was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
