CLERMONT, Fla. -- Highlanders softball dropped a 10-4 decision to St. Olaf College before rebounding for their first win of the season, a 8-6 victory over SUNY Purchase on Thursday.

In game 1, St. Olaf scored three times in the first two innings, but Houghton tied the score with one in the third and two in the fourth.

In the third, Morgan York (Canisteo, NY, Canisteo-Greenwood) singled and stole second to get into scoring position for Samantha Patoff (Mississauga, ON, Canada, Gordon Graydon Memeorial) who sent a triple to center and brought York home for the first Houghton run.

The Highlander bats were strong in the fourth. Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa) opened with a single, Sarah Beirne (Port Jervis, NY, Port Jervis) followed with a single and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Sara Schwingle (Henrietta, NY, Rush Henrietta) then drove Hayner home and moved Beirne to third on a single up the middle. After Julianna Evans (Lehighton, PA, Lehighton Area) walked, Adrean Tiffany (Loweville, NY, Loweville Academy) reached base on a fielder's choice that forced Schwingle out at third, but scored Beirne and advanced Evans to second. York singled to left to move Tiffany to second and Evans to third, but Patoff grounded out to third to end the inning.

St. Olaf added a run in the top of the fifth and broke the game open with four more in the top of the sixth. Houghton scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an Evans single, a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches.

St. Olaf closed the scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh.

York led the Highlander batters with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored. Patoff had a hit and an RBI.

Beirne pitched the full seven innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs. She added five strikeouts and four walks.
