Mason Scores Five Times in Loss to Cazenovia
HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Highlanders outscored Cazenovia, 7-6, in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a large halftime deficit in a 15-9 loss at home Thursday.
The Wildcasts scored twice in the first two minutes, before
Nicole Mason (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) tallied a man-up goal six minutes later. Cazenovia would score seven more times in the half.
Emily Mertzlufft (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster Central) scored her first of the year for the Highlanders in the opening half as Houghton trailed 9-2 at the break.
Mason scored again in the first minute of the second half, and after two more Wildcat goals, the Highlanders got three goals in a one-minute span midway through the half.
Amanda Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) scored twice and Mason added her third of the contest to pull the score to 11-6.
The Wildcats ended the run with back-to-back goals. The teams combined for five goals over the last six minutes, with Mason getting two more and
Tyler Reese (Unionville, PA, Unionville High School) scoring her first of the game.
With five goals on the day, Mason leads the Highlanders with 11 on the year.
After being outshot 20-9 in the first half, the Highlanders turned the tables and outshot Cazeoniva 13-8 after the break. The Wildcats had an 18-17 advantage in ground balls, while the Highlanders had a 14-11 edge in draw controls.
Lauren Niswander (Peninsula, OH, Revere) made seven saves and allowed 13 goals in net.
Carly Congilosi (Boston, NY, Eden) allowed two goals.
