Fisher 12, Hartwick 7

The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team won its Empire 8 Conference season opener on Saturday, as the Cardinals picked up a 12-7 win over visiting Hartwick College at Fisher's Growney Stadium.  After trailing 4-2 during the second quarter, Fisher scored 10 of the game's next 11 goals to take control.

The Cardinals held Hartwick’s Harry Hughes, who is fifth in the nation in goals per game (3.67), scoreless on the afternoon.

Hartwick opened the game with two goals in the first eight minutem but the Cardinals answered right back. In the latter part of the first quarter, Fisher strung together back-to-back goals. 

Again in the second quarter, Hartwick scored the period's first two goals, but the Cardinals responded again as Hartwick took a 4-2 lead early in the quarter, but Fisher stormed back with four-straight goals to take two-score lead at 6-4.

Hartwick tacked on one goal before the half, as Fisher went to the locker rooms with a 6-5 advantage.

Fisher flipped the script in the second half, scoring the stanza’s first six goals to take a 12-5 lead with 7:37 to play in the game. 

Fisher dominated faceoffs (20-of-23) and was a perfect 8-for-8 on clears.  

Jamie Campagna stopped seven saves to earn the win in net.


Stevens 22, Alfred 8

The nationally ranked No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-8 victory over Alfred University on Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field. 

The Ducks dominated Alfred, the nation's top scoring offense and second best defense in Division III, in every facet of the contest. Stevens never trailed in the showdown and were only tied at 2-2 and 3-3 with the Saxons before rolling off six straight goals to put the game out of each just 3:48 into the second quarter.

Alfred entered the tussle averaging 19.8 goals per outing while surrendering just 4.4 through six games.

Freshman Austin Boyd picked up his first collegiate victory in cage for the Ducks with seven saves in 60 minutes of action. Saturday's game marked the second contest in which Boyd has seen action for Stevens and faced 38 shots from the Saxons.

Stevens tallied the first two goals to kick off the game in the opening minute of the first quarter.  Alfred posted back-to-back goals by the 11:43 mark before the Ducks regained the lead at 3-2 on an unassisted score.

Two minutes later, the Saxons knotted the game back up at 3-3, but Stevens went on its 6-0 run from the 2:11 mark of the first 15 minutes up to 11:12 remaining in the second period. 

The Saxons ended the run with two scores just eight seconds apart to bring the contest back to a 9-5 difference, but Stevens would once again push its lead back out to seven with three more goals before the half. Alfred had the last say in the second quarter, scoring with 2:09 left and went into halftime down, 12-6.

As the second half got underway, Alfred registered the first marker of the third quarter with 10:48 to go, only to watch the Ducks rip off 10 consecutive goals over the next 19:26 of game time to make the difference, 22-7. The Saxons ended the 30-goal outburst with 34 seconds left in regulation to put a stop to the Ducks' streak.

Stevens outscored Alfred, 10-2, in the second half and won 9-of-13 faceoffs.


Elmira 10, Swarthmore 13

The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team was always in the game but fell late to visiting Swarthmore College, 13-10, Saturday afternoon at Elmira Free Academy. 

Elmira got on the board just more than five minutes in for the opening score. Swarthmore scored three of the next four goals to take a 3-2 edge at the end of the first quarter.

Elmira found the back of the net just three minutes into the second quarter to tie the contest at 3-3. The Garnets used a strong effort netting four of the next five goals including a man-down marker with one minute left in the half. Swarthmore took a 7-4 lead into intermission.

EC scored three of the next four goals out of halftime to get within 8-7 midway through the third.

After the Garnets opened up a 10-7 lead Elmira answered with scores to trim the deficit to 10-9 early in the fourth quarter. However, Swarthmore tallied three of the game's final four tallies to hold on for the 13-10 victory.


Nazareth 15, RIT 25
Host RIT erupted for 10 second-quarter goals Saturday to break open a close game as the Tigers went on to take a 25-15 men's lacrosse victory over the Golden Flyers in a non-conference game on RIT's Turf Field.

Trailing 4-2 after the first quarter, Nazareth got a man-up goal from freshman Luke Wooters just 17 seconds into the second quarter before RIT strung together seven straight goals and 10 of the next 11 to take an insurmountable 14-4 advantage at halftime.

Jack Krzyston paced the Tigers with four goals and three assists, while Eddie Kiesa added four goals and two assists. Allister Warren and Kyle Aquin also scored four times each. Wooters had five goals for Nazareth to boost his team-leading total to 27. Freshman Troy Haefele also scored three times as did sophomore midfielder Drew Simoneau, who went 22 for 38 on faceoffs and collected 11 ground balls.

Junior Chris Aycock also scored twice for Nazareth; Collin Clark had one goal and one assist and Nick Loscalzo also had a goal.

RIT scored three of the first four goals of the second half to extend its lead to 17-5. The Golden Flyers had a couple of flurries of their own, scoring three times in a stretch of 2:33 in the third quarter and scoring the first four goals of the fourth quarter.

RIT had a 52-50 edge in shots overall and scored five extra-man goals. Freshman Scott Brown started in goal for Nazareth and made three saves. Senior Tim Doyle played in the second half and had six saves. Pat Johnston had 13 saves in three quarters for the Tigers.
