ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 4, 2013) – Senior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) and junior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) swept the first Empire 8 Conference weekly baseball awards for Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday. Both players have helped Stevens to a 3-1 start to the season and stood out this past weekend in two highly contested games.

Lowenstein, this week’s Player of the Week, batted .444 (4-for-9) in the 1-1 week for the Ducks. In an 8-7 loss to No. 24 Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, Lowenstein collected two hits in five trips to the plate, scoring one run and driving in one more. He then went 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, a run scored and RBI in the 4-3 win over Lehman College on Sunday.

The top conference pitcher this week, Courter, threw six innings to earn the victory in a 4-3 win over Lehman on Sunday out of the bullpen. The Lightning tallied three-straight singles to start the fourth before Courter entered the game. The senior walked in a run and then gave up the second on a groundout. Courter got out of the fourth with no further damage and gave up just one hit over the final six innings of the game. He walked just one batter and struck out five.

So far this season, Lowenstein is hitting .357 with three runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. Courter has thrown in two games with 10 strikeouts in eight innings pitched and has surrendered just one hit with two walks.

The Ducks will play three games this weekend against John Jay College and the College of Staten Island. Stevens and John Jay play a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m. and then entertain Staten Island in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
