Hawks Fall to Franklin in Final Match in Hilton Head

HILTON, SC – Hartwick men’s tennis lost a 9-0 decision to the Franklin College (IN) Grizzlies on Friday evening to close out their three-match trip south to Hilton Head, SC. A pair of Hawks, senior
Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) and freshman
Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Suffield), fell just short in their respective singles matches with both falling in super tie-breaks.
Dumas, playing at first singles, won the opening set of his match with Franklin’s Blake Wareham with a game count of 6-4. Wareham would return the favor in the second as he took the set, 6-3, forcing a race to 10 points to determine the winner of the match. In the third set, Wareham would take 10 of 14 points for the Franklin victory.
Brown came close to his first collegiate win in the fourth singles flight. After dropping the first set to Robby Woehrle, 6-3, Brown came back in the second set by a margin of six games to three. In the super tie-breaker, Woehrle would deny Brown the victory, 10-7.
Sophomore
Keith O’Connor (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) won seven games in a losing effort to Franklin’s Neal Herzog. The final tally was 6-4, 6-3.
Hartwick will open up Empire 8 Conference play on the road next weekend. The Hawks play at Nazareth College on Saturday, April 6. They play at St. John Fisher the following day.
