CAZENOVIA, N.Y. -- The Highlanders won game one 14-6, but lost the rubber match 9-3 in baseball action at Cazenovia College on Tuesday.

Houghton jumped out early in game one, scoring four runs on three singles. The team was also helped by two hit batsman and an error. Cazenovia pulled one back in the bottom of the second, but Houghton scored five more times in the top of the third to put this one away.

Jacob Bannerman (Wasaga Beach, ON, Canada, Stayner Collegiate Institute) started the inning with a double to right field and was driven home by the next hitter, Jeremy Austin (Corning, NY, Corning East HS)  who got his own two-base hit. Patrick Parsons (Wellsboro, PA) singled to move Austin to third and Jens Omdal (Olympia, WA) followed with a sacrifice ground out that scored Austin and moved Parsons to second. Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY) and Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada) each reached base on back to back errors. Parsons scored on the second miscue. Ignacio Villalobos (Brantford, ON, Canada, Assumption College School) grounded out to short, but it was enough to knock in Knapp for the Highlanders fourth run of the inning. With Michael Kerr (Hamburg, NY, Hamburg HS) at the plate, McKay came home on a passed ball by the catcher to finish the scoring.

Cazenovia got three on base in the bottom of the third and a grand slam quickly cleared the bases and made the score 9-5.

Houghton added single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth. Cazenovia scored once in the bottom of the sixth, before Houghton closed the scoring with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Bannerman finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Villalobos was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Austin and Parsons each had two hits. Austin also drove in three runs. Bannerman and Knapp had two stolen bases apiece for the Highlanders, who had six stolen bases as a team.

On the mound, Bannerman went five and two-thirds, allowing nine hits and six runs. Jared Knowlton (Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur HS) pitched an inning and a third with two strikeouts in relief.

Game 2 -- Medaille 9, Houghton 3

The Highlanders got all their scoring in the first two innings, jumping out to a 3-0 lead, but the bats dried up for the rest of the contest.

Cazenovia wasn't behind for long, as they recorded five hits and took advantage of a balk by Houghton starter Kevin Cassar (Mississauga, ON, Canada) to tie the score at three in the bottom of the second.

Three straight singles in the bottom of the third drove home the go-ahead run for the hosts and a three-run homer pushed the advantage to 7-3. Cazenovia put two more across the plate in the bottom of the fourth.

After recording three hits in the opening two innings, Houghton would get only three more the rest of the way. Knapp was the top hitter, going 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. McKay was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Cassar pitched three innings and allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs. Knowlton allowed three hits in three innings of relief.

Houghton (6-11) returns to action on Friday, April 12 when they host Stevens Tech for a doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m. The games will be played at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y.
