Darwyn Cook Named Conference FAR Chair
ROCHESTER, NY – Darwyn Cook, a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Alfred University, has been chosen as the new faculty athletic representative (FAR) chair to the Empire 8 Athletic Conference, replacing Wenmouth Williams of Ithaca College.
In the new role, Cook will work closely with top university administrators to support an environment where academics remain a central focus in college sports.
“We have been fortunate to have Dr. Williams help guide the educational mission for our conference, and we are grateful for his dedicated service to our student-athletes,” said Commissioner Chuck Mitrano.
Cook will work with the FARs from the eight other E8 schools to make recommendations regarding the role of faculty in athletic department policy-making; athletic seasons and scheduling and their impact on academics and student welfare; and standards that will promote academic success of student-athletes.
“We look forward to the expertise and guidance that Darwyn will provide the conference in the coming years,” said Commissioner Mitrano.
Darwyn Cook has been an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Alfred University since the fall of 2000 and has served as the FAR at AU since the fall of 2010.
Cook holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from SUNY Potsdam (1990) and also earned a master’s degree in Mathematics from SUNY Potsdam, also in 1990. He earned his PhD in mathematics from Louisiana State University in 1996.
After graduating from LSU, Cook taught mathematics for four years at Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH, before taking his current position at Alfred University.
Cook’s current research interests involve the application of technology to the teaching of mathematics. As Faculty Athletics Representative at AU, he is working on implementing a new reporting system aimed at improving retention rates among student-athletes.
