Houghton Just Misses at First Win
HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Highlander women's lacrosse team treated the home crowd to a strong performance but came up one goal short in a 10-9 loss to Medaille College on Tuesday.
Houghton jumped ahead 2-0 and had a 5-2 lead with 7:21 remaining in the first half, but the Mavericks outscored the Highlanders 4-2 before the half ended. Two of the goals came in the last 16 seconds of the half.
Amanda Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and
Nicole Mason (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) scored twice in the first half, with
Tyler Reese (Unionville, PA, Unionville High School) and
Tyler Reese (Unionville, PA, Unionville High School) also finding the back of the net.
The Mavericks added two more scores over the first 15 minutes of the second half, before Zacchigna scored again to pull Houghton to 8-7. Another two Medaille goals seemed to put the game away, but Phongsamouth scored with 32 seconds left and on the ensuing draw, Zacchigna got control and sprinted through the Maverick defense to score her fourth of the game and pull Houghton to within a goal with 20 seconds remaining.
However, the next draw was controlled by Medaille and the visitors ran out the clock.
Shots were 28-20 in favor of Medaille. The Mavericks also had a 13-8 edge in draw controls. Houghton won the groundball battle, 19-15.
Lauren Niswander (Peninsula, OH, Revere) maded 10 saves in goal.
The Highlanders get a week off before they welcome Nazareth College to Burke Field for a 5 p.m. contest on Tuesday, April 16.
