Fisher Wins at Oswego; Stevens Ends Losing Streak with Win at Drew
St. John FIsher 7, Oswego 4
St. John Fisher College’s Nick Flemister went 4-for-4 with five RBI to lead the baseball team to a 7-4 win over host SUNY Oswego on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader. The second game was canceled due to inclement weather.
Sean Badger went five innings to earn the win, raising his record to 4-1, while sophomore Thomas Dybas earned the save, recording the final four outs of the game. With the win, Fisher improves to 14-7, while Oswego, who defeated SUNY Cortland – then the No. 1 ranked team in the nation just six days ago – falls to
10-10.
Fisher trailed 2-1 after two innings, but took the lead for good with a two-run double down the left-field line from Flemister, making it 3-2. The Cardinals tacked on three more in the fourth. Mike Fahy singled to score Tim Coykendall and Flemister added a two-run single, scoring Sean Osterman and Fahy.
Flemister was at it again in the sixth, doubling in Osterman, to finished with five RBI and four hits (both career highs).
Fahy finished with two runs scored and three stolen bases, while Mike Roman also picked up two hits and two stolen bases. As a team, Fisher was a perfect 8-for-8 in base stealing.
The Cardinals return action at 4 p.m. on Friday and will host Cazenovia College.
Stevens 8, Drew 2
The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team rallied late to earn a 8-2 victory over Drew University on Wednesday afternoon in Madison, N.J. and even its record at 12-12 this season. Stevens snapped its five-game losing streak with the triumph and posted its high run output in its last nine contests.
Junior
Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and sophomore
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) both went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in to lead the Ducks. Allen also smacked two doubles with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Mannello picked up a double in the fourth inning.
Stevens struck first in the game with one run in the fourth off the Mannello double and then fell behind, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth. The Ducks would answer with two runs in the sixth inning, two more in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Allen drove in sophomore
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) in the sixth inning after a lead-off double by Nickels and would come into score on a base hit by Mannello just two batters later.
In the seventh, Nickels stroked a double which plated senior
Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) before Allen earned his second RBI of the afternoon to bring in Nickels for the second time. The Ducks capped off their scoring thanks to two errors in the eighth inning by Drew. Both errors by the Rangers led to two of the three runs scored in the frame.
Freshman
Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) earned the victory on the hill for Stevens in five innings of work. Robbins scattered six hits and struck out five batters with no walks. Drew managed both runs off Robbins in the fifth inning. The three-man bullpen of sophomore
Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.), freshman
Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Allen gave up just three hits and punched out five hitters in the final four innings.
Nickels went 2-for-5 in the game with two doubles, while Courter also picked up two hits in four trips to the plate with two runs scored.
Stevens will travel to Houghton College for four games on Friday and Saturday this week. All four contests will be played at St. Bonaventure University with Game One of Friday beginning at 2 p.m.
