Houghton Notches Second Win of Campaign

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Houghton Highlanders men's lacrosse team notched their second win of the season Thursday against the Lyndon State Hornets, 21-6.

Three players were able to score four goals or more for Houghton, led by Tyler Kempney (Carthage, NY, Carthage High School) who had a record-setting stat line of eight goals and five assists. That performance set the school records for most goals scored and assists dished out by a single player in one game in the young program’s history.
               
Houghton was in control for the majority of the contest: Lyndon State’s only lead would come in the very beginning of the game, after Hornet Timothy Patten scored the first goal at 14:23 in the first quarter. Kempney would score two minutes later and the Highlanders never looked back, going on a 6-1 run to finish the quarter. The Highlanders scored seven of the nine goals in the second to go into halftime with a 13-4 lead.

The second half would continue to follow the same script, as Houghton held Lyndon State to two goals in the second half while scoring eight themselves to set up the final score.

Houghton led in just about every statistical category, holding a 50-25 advantage in ground balls, winning four more face offs than the visitors (17-13), and committing eight less turnovers (28-20). Despite the dominant performance, Houghton held just a 44-42 edge in shots.
               
Michael Ball (Binghamton, NY, Chenango Valley) also had a career night with five goals on seven shots, and Ross Chapman (Kemptville, ON, Canada, N. Grenville District) added four goals of his own. Sean Daigler (Elma, NY, Iroquois)  Matt Vogan (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park High School)  Scott Martens (Harford, PA, Mountain View High School), and Diego Villalobos (Tres Rios, Costa Rica, Faith Academy ) also scored one goal apiece. Josh Bailey (Millerton, PA, Williamson High School) was able to fight for nine ground balls, just behind Kempeny’s team-leading eleven.

Goalie Gabriel Browning (Aitkin, MN, Aitkin High School) had seven saves and allowed four goals in three quarters of play. Josh Haingray (Houghton, NY, Houghton Academy) played the final quarter, tallying one save and allowing one goal.

Houghton (2-6) will play their next game on the road at Keuka on Saturday, April 13.
