STEVENS v HOUGHTON
After yesterday’s second game of a doubleheader between the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team and Houghton College was suspended in the fifth inning due to darkness, Stevens would go on to win, 7-0. The Ducks would then take the opener in today’s double dip, 2-1, but fell in the nightcap, 4-0. Stevens is now 14-14 overall this season.
Game Two: Stevens 7, Houghton 0
Play resumed this morning at 10 a.m. with the Ducks leading, 3-0, heading into the fifth inning, and a four-run seventh lifted Stevens to a 7-0 shutout win.
In the third inning, Stevens tallied two runs thanks to a two-run homerun from junior

Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) reached on an error with two outs before Allen stepped to the plate.
Stevens would tack on another run in the fourth after another two-out error by Houghton. Freshman
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took advantage of the Highlanders mishap and moved up to second base. Fellow freshman
John Sideris (Whitestone, N.Y.) capitalized on the extra at bat and doubled to bring Sieber home.
After the continuation, the Ducks put the game out of reach with four runs in the seventh. With one out, freshman
Thomas Sheridan (Staten Island, N.Y.) initiated the rally with a hit by pitch and moved up to third on a double by classmate
Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.). Freshman
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) was intentionally walked to load the bases for sophomore
Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.). Nickels stepped to the plate and stroked a double to plate Sheridan and Bush for the first two runs. Yano would score on a single by sophomore
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Mannello tallied the final run after moving up to third on a stolen base and fielder’s choice to reach third. Another error by Houghton allowed Mannello to score.
Sophomore
Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, Md.) picked up the victory in five innings pitched with four strike outs and no walks. Buccheri scattered six hits before sophomore
Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed the final two innings for the combined shut out.
Saturday – Game One: Stevens 2, Houghton 1
Boardman carried over his strong effort in the abbreviated game and threw four more innings for the victory. He gave up just two hits and struck out two batters. Allen closed out the one-run affair for his second save of the season in two innings pitched with one punchout.
Allen picked up one RBI in the two-run third for the Ducks as well.

Houghton scored its lone run of the game off of senior
Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) in the sixth inning. Mathews, who recorded one inning pitched, gave up consecutive hits before Allen moved to the mound from left field. After the switch, a sacrifice bunt and fielder’s choice brought in the run.
The game ended when Bush gunned down the final out of the contest at home after a triple was hit to right field.
Game Two: Houghton 4, Stevens 0
The Ducks suffered their second shutout loss of the weekend and tallied just five hits.
Hennelly highlighted the offensive output with two hits, while Courter doubled in the defeat from the hill. Courter gave up nine hits and four runs over 5.2 innings pitched. He also struck out three batters.
The Highlanders secured the victory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits. Five of the first seven batters of the inning reached base to account for all three runs in the frame.
Stevens’ best chance to score came in the fourth inning with two outs. Senior
Michael Donovan (Frisco, Texas) singled and would get to third after a walk to Mannello and a wild pitch. A line out by Courter ended the threat with both runners in scoring position.
The Ducks also put two runners on in the seventh inning but a double play killed the rally.
Over the four-game series, Courter posted the top batting average at .462 on six hits in 13 at bats. Allen drove in three of the nine runs scored, while Boardman and Buccheri combined for 11 innings pitched and six strike outs without allowing a run.
